Plans to reverse Maori ward legislation would breach the Government's Treaty partnership

Plans to reverse Maori ward legislation would breach the Government's Treaty partnership

The bill would require councils to hold a binding referendum on Maori wards - and is the latest to be subject to Waitangi Tribunal inquiry.

The Tribunal's found the Crown's failed to protect Maori rights and interests - and calls for a halt to the bill.

National Urban Maori Authority chair Lady Tureiti Moxon says she'd like to see the Government having a real discussion with the people it concerns.

She says it's wrong to unilaterally decide what is best for all New Zealanders.

She says tino rangatiratanga is not just about one group of people - it's about all of us.
