A laser strike on a plane over Rolleston has led to another police warning over the potential fatal consequences of such actions.
A Mt Cook Airline ATR72 was flying over the Canterbury town on Sunday when it was struck by a red light shone from the ground about 8.30pm.
Police say the origins of the laser was in the Beaumont Drive and Strauss Drive area.
They urged anyone with information about the event to contact them.
The incident comes after reports of a laser strike on an Air New Zealand flight at Kerikeri, in Northland, last Thursday.
Late last year, the New Zealand Air Line Pilots' Association called for harsher penalties for people caught shining lasers at aircraft.
The call came after Civil Aviation Authority figures showed a rise in laser attacks, with 155 reported incidents in the 11 months to end of November, compared with 152 for the 2016 year.
