A man in his 40s died yesterday morning in hospital from the injuries he sustained in Thursday's crash near Waiouru in the central North Island.
Two others are seriously injured in hospital.
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission says its three investigators were airlifted onto the site yesterday.
Chief investigator Tim Burfoot says they're collecting evidence and mapping the site again today, but it's the start of a long haul.
He says investigations take between 12 and 18 months.
