Last year's finalists have cruised to opening wins in the domestic netball season

2017 runners-up the Central Pulse have eased past the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic 45-33, while defending champions the Southern Steel have thumped the Northern Mystics 55-47.

Both games were in Palmerston North as part of the season-opening triple header, with the final game between the Northern Stars and Mainland Tactix at 6:10.

Kiwi driver Shane van Gisbergen will start from pole in this evening's Supercars race in Perth.

The 2016 champion has finished ahead of teammate Jamie Whincup, with Andre Heimgartner the next best New Zealander in fourth.

Racing gets underway at 6:15.

The Wellington Saints have come from behind to beat the Supercity Rangers 108-91 in the National Basketball League.
