St John attended an incident at the courthouse this morning, and took a man with serious injuries to Dunedin Hospital.
Duty lawyer Max Winders says two men were involved in an alleged assault on a third man in the cells.
He's suggested in court all three should be remanded until Tuesday without appearing.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Mike Wingfield says they'll be interviewing the two men involved, with a view to laying further charges.
