Downpours have left an already rain-soaked Gisborne district swamped with flooding.
Strong winds have downed many trees in the town and left streets scattered with debris.
The Minister of Agriculture has announced that damage around the Tolaga Bay area, caused by last week's flooding, is now classified as a medium-scale adverse event.
Hawke's Bay residents are preparing to be the next region to get a hammering.
MetService is predicting 100-130 millimetres of rain through to midday tomorrow in the Ruahine and Kaweka Ranges, on top of what the region has already experienced.
Hawke's Bay Civil Defence Controller Ian Macdonald says most rivers are coping so far, although close attention is being paid to the Esk and rivers around Wairoa.
