Super mayor bid unlikely for Hubbard
Former Auckland Mayor Dick Hubbard says he has no plans to make a bid to become the super mayor
24 July 2009
Former Auckland mayor Dick Hubbard is ruling out any immediate return to local body politics in Auckland.
He has fronted select committee hearings at Parliament today on the Auckland Super City proposal, giving his views on what structures should be put in place.
Mr Hubbard says his appearance was about giving his ideas on the reform he believes Auckland needs, not about launching a campaign for the super mayoralty.
"Will I be involved in the future? I have no plans to do at this stage. I believe it's believe it's important that in life, whatever faces you you never say never - but it's not on my agenda at the moment."
Mr Hubbard supports the super city concept but believes the structure put forward by the Government is far too weak.
The former mayor says the proposed community boards should be called boroughs instead, as that would give communities a sense of identity and place. He says the boroughs should be bulk funded and be responsible for all local infrastructure facilities and other issues in their areas.
