Mannering "shocked" at captaincy

New Warriors captain Simon Mannering says he has spoken to the ousted Steve Price, who has offered his full support

Simon Mannering is shocked by his promotion to the Warriors captaincy.

Mannering is just 23, but has played 100 first grade games and nearly 20 tests for the Kiwis. He will lead the NRL club next season instead of Steve Price, who has held the position for the last five years.

Mannering says he was given the news by coach Ivan Cleary last week.

"Massive honour to be asked to captain the side. Can't say I was expecting it, but yeah, massive privilege."

Mannering says he has spoken with Price.

"He was pretty good aye. He's said, 'yeah mate, I'm fully behind you'. Obviously he'd be a little disappointed not to have the job again, but he said 'mate I'm behind you a hundred percent and if you need anything during the year just come ask'."

Price will see out his playing contract with the club next year.

Warriors CEO Wayne Scurrah says the decision has nothing to do with rumours Price may have become stale in the role.

"Certainly not a reflection on Steve Price. I mean he's been the captain for five years and to me and I think the majority of people he's been outstanding and he will continue to play an important role in our leadership."
