A 74-year-old whitebaiter has been rescued alive a kilometre out to sea.
Police in Canterbury received a call late this afternoon saying a man had been swept out to sea from the mouth of the Rakaia River.
A rescue helicopter was sent from Christchurch, and at about 6:20 tonight the 74-year-old was found alive, a kilometre out to sea. He has been taken to hospital suffering from hypothermia.
Police say the man's life jacket played a big part in saving his life.
