Whakatane police have launched a homicide investigation following the death of a high-profile Rotorua man.
Hawea Vercoe died early this morning on 'The Strand'. He was the principal of Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Rotoiti.
Police have cordoned off the scene for forensic examination and are being assisted by the ESR.
Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen says it is still too early to say exactly what happened. But he says it appears that some sort of fight broke out which resulted in Mr Vercoe being punched to the ground.
Witnesses are assisting police with their inquiries. A post mortem examination will be carried out on Mr Vercoe's body tomorrow morning.
