    Bird's wounding conviction quashed

Australian judge has quashed the conviction of former rugby league player Greg Bird after girlfriend said glassing was an accident

    25 November 2009 - article from www.rugbyleague.co.nz

A former Sydney rugby league star's conviction for wounding his girlfriend has been quashed.

Ex-Cronulla player Greg Bird had been sentenced to eight months prison for slashing Katie Milligan's face with a broken glass in August last year.

However the judge has accepted testimony at Bird's appeal this week from Ms Milligan that it was an accident. She suffered a broken eye-socket and cuts around her left eye.

Bird hugged Ms Milligan in court after the decision. He says it has not been an easy time for them.

"Both me and Katie are extremely relieved. This has been a very, very tough arduous journey over the last 15 or so months. It's a massive weight lifted off our shoulders."
