Cheryl Cole shows support for Olympic diver Tom Daley

Cheryl Cole has shown her support for Olympic diver Tom Daley after he was sent abuse on twitter after a recent competition.

After missing out on a medal, Cheryl sent him a public message via the micro-blogging website.

The singer - who used to be married footballer Ashley Cole - tweeted: "I think you are amazing!"

Cheryl asked him: "Will you teach me how to swan dive?"

The sportsman replied: "Of course!!! But first you need to follow me ;)"

Tom has a girlfriend, 17-year-old American diver Kassidy Cook, who also supported him after a social networking user blasted him when he and his partner Pete Waterfield missed out on a medal when they finished fourth in the men's synchronised 10m platform diving event.

She wrote: "don't worry, you'll get them in the individuals! Miss you! / He is such a great guy. There are some truely foul people out there!"

Tom, whose father Rob died following a cancer battle in May last year, retweeted a message he'd received from '@Rileyy_69' which said "you let your dad down i hope you know that."

The One Direction boys also made him feel better about the comment.

Liam Payne tweeted: "@TomDaley1994 ignore them dikheads mate we all sat and watched you today and we thought u did incredible."

Tom responded to Louis Tomlinson's tweet: "Thanks :) RT @Louis_Tomlinson: @TomDaley1994 mate, best of luck for the individual. I'll be watching !!" he replied to Louis' post.

Tom is thought to be receiving 50,000 tweets per day during the summer games.
