    Lions fire Carlos Spencer

Super Rugby wooden spooners the Lions have sacked backline coach Carlos Spencer, with fellow Kiwi and head coach John Mitchell still under investigation.

Former All Black and Blues first five-eighth Carlos Spencer has followed John Mitchell in the cleanout of Lions coaching staff after a dire Super Rugby campaign.

The Golden Lions Rugby Union said in a statement that Spencer, Mitchell's backline coach, was sacked earlier in the week, along with conditioning coach Wayne Taylor.

Mitchell, All Blacks coach from 2002-2003, was suspended in late June and is under investigation, apparently after a list of grievances against him from players was handed to Lions president Kevin de Klerk.

The Lions finished bottom of the Super Rugby table this season, winning just three from 16 matches.

De Klerk told South African media in June that the complaints were around how Mitchell handled players.

The New Zealander, who coached the Western Force for five years from 2005 before leaving after problems with players, is expected to learn his fate next month.
