No NZers in Thailand nightclub blaze

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says no New Zealanders are believed to have been caught up in a deadly fire at a Thai nightclub.

No New Zealanders are believed to be injured after a fire at a Thailand nightclub popular with tourists killed four people and left at least 20 others injured.

The blaze broke out at the Tiger disco on the island of Phuket early on Friday, AFP reports.

Four people had been confirmed dead, and were believed to be foreign tourists, while more than 20 were injured.

Two people, including a Frenchman, were in a critical condition with severe burns.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) says the New Zealand embassy in Bangkok is making inquiries with local authorities about casualties.

It said unofficial reports indicated no New Zealanders were among those injured.

MFAT says formal identification of those killed by the fire may take some time.

The fire was believed to have started when lightning struck a transformer at the nightclub.
