    Motorcyclist dies in road smash

A 45-year-old motorcyclist has died in a collision with a car near Morrinsville, while an elderly couple in the car are unhurt.

A motorcyclist has died in a collision with a car at Waihou, near Morrinsville in eastern Waikato, police say.

The 45-year-old man from Waihou, who has not yet been named, died at the scene of the crash on a State Highway 26 intersection about 6.45pm on Friday, Sergeant Mark Toomey of Morrinsville police said.

The two elderly occupants of the car were not hurt and had been spoken to by police. The highway was closed for several hours but motorists were able to use nearby detours.

Sgt Toomey said the Serious Crash Unit was investigating.
