Wreaths laid in Long Tan memory

A wreath-laying ceremony has commemorated one of the heaviest conflicts in the Vietnam War, the Battle of Long Tan.

Wreaths were laid at the National War Memorial in Wellington on Saturday to commemorate the fierce Battle of Long Tan in the Vietnam War 46 years ago.

The battle was commemorated for the first time in New Zealand last year but is one of the most well-known Australian engagements and one of the heaviest conflicts of the war.

New Zealand artillery men were part of an infantry force of 100 who came up against between 1500 and 2500 Viet Cong troops.

Around 100 war veterans, Culture and Heritage Minister Chris Finlayson and Defence Force chief Lieutenant General Rhys Jones attended the wreath-laying.

In total 3890 New Zealanders served in the Vietnam War, with 37 killed and 187 wounded.
