Man charged with stealing war medals

A 55-year-old Invercargill man faces 24 theft and fraud charges over war medals belonging to former New Zealand soldiers, police say.

An Invercargill man has been arrested and charged with stealing war medals from former soldiers and their families.

The 55-year-old man, who was arrested on Monday, faces 24 theft and fraud charges relating to military medals belonging to New Zealand Returned Servicemen, Detective Constable Kerry Russell says.

He has been released on bail and is due to appear in Invercargill District Court on Friday.

The man, whose name has not been released, was arrested following a police probe initiated by an investigation into alleged stolen war medals by television show Fair Go.

In the programme, aired in May, a medal conservator is accused of failing to return some of the WWII medals he was given for mounting by a customer more than two years ago.

He is also accused of replacing some of the war medals with fakes before returning them to the client.
