    Driver in crash comes forward

Police are speaking to the driver of a Suzuki thought to be involved in a fatal Christchurch hit-and-run but are still seeking the driver of a Toyota.

Police are speaking to the driver of a car believed to be linked to a fatal hit-and-run in Christchurch late on Saturday.

Police had been seeking to speak to the driver of an older-model red Toyota and a Suzuki Swift believed to be connected to the crash on Shands Road in the suburb of Hornby at about 11pm on Saturday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Merton said one of the drivers had heeded the call to come forward and explain what happened.

"We're speaking to the occupants of a Suzuki Swift that may have been one of the cars involved," Sgt Merton told Radio New Zealand.

"We will continue our efforts to track down the driver of the Toyota and evaluate all the statements we've taken so far off witnesses in the Suzuki."

Police can't say whether they think the cars were racing.

Witness Juanita Wehi said she heard a noisy car go past and then a bang.

She said young people often stood in groups on the side of the road near the scene.

"As sad and tragic as what's happened tonight is, to be honest with you, it's not really that unexpected," she told One News.

The crash was one of two serious hit-and-run incidents in Christchurch.

In the second incident, at about 3am on Sunday, a car struck a pedestrian outside Burger King in Moorhouse Avenue before fleeing.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone who had knowledge of the driver or vehicle.

The victim, a man in his 20s, was taken to Christchurch Hospital with multiple serious injuries.
