    Strong earthquake rattles Christchurch

A quake measuring 4.3 has rattled Christchurch, the first decent shake the city has experienced for more than a month.

A shallow 4.3-magnitude earthquake has shaken Christchurch.

The tremor, centred 15km east of the city, struck at 1.35pm.

It was 12km deep and Geonet ranked its intensity as "strong".

It was reported to have been felt mainly in the Canterbury area although there were reports of it being felt in Carterton in the Wairarapa and as far south as Dunedin. More than 700 people reported feeling it.

A second smaller quake, measuring 3.6, struck just after 2pm.

No damage had been reported and St John ambulance said it had not received any reports of injuries or fielded any calls.
