A 5.5-magnitude earthquake has struck near Taupo and been felt around the North Island but apparently caused little damage.
The "moderate" quake struck 10km northeast of the town at a depth of 110km at 12.43pm on Wednesday, GNS Science said.
The quake was felt as far afield as Auckland, inland Canterbury and the West Coast, according to the GNS website.
It was felt most strongly in Tauranga, Wellington and inland from Gisborne.
However, Fire Service communications centres in Auckland and Wellington said they did not log any calls reporting damage.
