A woman found dead in the back seat of a car parked near New Plymouth was hit while out running, police say.
The body of 45-year-old Anne Elizabeth McCullough, of New Plymouth, was found about 2.30pm on Saturday in the back seat of the purple Holden Commodore near a place known as Meeting of the Waters, south of the city.
Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Coward said it appeared she had been out running on a rural road and was hit by the car.
A 27-year-old New Plymouth man has been charged with manslaughter and will appear in the city's district court next week.
Police are appealing for any sightings of the car in the area on Saturday afternoon and forensic specialists and serious crash investigators have been examining the scene.
