    Schoolgirls praised in river rescue

Hamilton schoolgirls have been praised for their part in rescuing a woman after her mobility scooter fell 20m into the Waikato River.

A woman riding a mobility scooter has been rescued by schoolgirls and other members of the public after she fell into the Waikato River in Hamilton.

The woman fell about 20m from a walkway into the river, near the old Waipa Delta pier on the eastern bank, about 1.30pm on Tuesday, police said.

"A group of Sacred Heart Girls' College students, assisted by other members of the public, entered the water and kept the woman's head above water," said Senior Sergeant Wayne Petherick.

St John and the Fire Service were then able to pull the woman and her scooter from the water.

The woman was taken to hospital. Her injuries were unclear and police didn't know if the scooter had landed on her during her fall.

"Either way the people involved in her rescue have every reason to be proud of their actions," Snr Sgt Petherick said.

He had little doubt those who had gone to the woman's rescue played a major part in her rescue and police would be looking at the most appropriate way of recognising their actions.

Police were not yet sure why the fall happened.
