    Adams set to undergo surgery

Double Olympic shot put champion Valerie Adams is hoping ankle and knee surgery later this week will help extend her career beyond the 2016 Rio Olympics.

World champion shot putter Valerie Adams is taking time off for surgery to clear up ankle and knee problems, hoping to strengthen her long-term prospects of three successive Olympic titles.

Manager Nick Cowan says Adams will go under the knife on Friday, with operations scheduled to clear up on-going problems with her left ankle and a relatively new issue with her right knee.

Double Olympic gold medallist Adams has no events scheduled before next year's Glasgow Commonwealth Games beginning in July next year, with Cowan saying the emphasis is on getting rehabilitation right first time as she looks towards Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Adams picked up her fourth world title earlier this year in Moscow, and has extended her unbeaten run to 42 competitions over the past three years.
