    Train hits car near Wellington

A train has hit a car which was obstructing the track at a level crossing near Carterton.

A car and a train have collided on a level crossing in the Wairarapa.

The passenger train from Masterton to Wellington "clipped" the car just after 11am on Friday at a level crossing at Andersons Line in Carterton, police say.

No one was injured in the incident.

KiwiRail says the car was at a stop sign and had driven onto the line when the incident occurred.

"We would urge drivers to be extremely cautious when coming up to level crossings," a KiwiRail spokeswoman told NZ Newswire.

The driver of the train has been sent home as part of the rail company's incident procedure.

"Obviously these things can be very unsettling for them," the spokeswoman said.

Passengers on board the train are being bussed to Wellington while buses will replace the 12.55pm service.

KiwiRail expects services to resume in the afternoon.
