Charlotte, Oliver most popular baby names

Charlotte and Oliver continue to be popular names for kids, topping the most popular baby names lists for last year.

Charlotte Dawson and Oliver Driver can pat themselves on the back - their given names proved popular with Kiwi parents last year.

Of course, it's hard to know whether the celebrities inspired the trend, but Charlotte and Oliver topped the favourite names for babies born in 2013, according to lists released on Friday by the Department of Internal Affairs.

Charlotte has been a popular name for newborns for a number of years, topping the most popular list in 2006.

Lorde, too, can feel flattered - Ella, the given name of the teen pop-sensation who rose to fame in 2013, came in at number 10.

Oliver was the most popular name last year, followed by Jack, the most popular boy's name in 2012 - so perhaps TVNZ's Jack Tame's star is falling.

Biblical names were popular for boys, with James, William, Liam, Samuel, Lucas, Noah and Thomas all making the top ten.

There were no surprises in the top 10 for either girls or boys, with all of the names placing in the top 20 most popular names during 2012.

The lists were compiled from names registered with the Department of Internal Affairs last year.
