Jason Derulo has praised Robin Thicke's desperate attempts to win back Paula Patton

The 24-year-old star admits he isn't exactly "best of friends" with the 'Blurred Lines' hitmaker but he sympathises with him for trying to get his estranged wife - with who he has four-year-old son Julian - back by penning his latest album 'Paula' in her honour

He said: "I think when somebody's desperate, they're desperate.

"I can't knock him for trying. He's trying everything to get his girl back, so I can't knock him for that ... I talked to him personally, and we're not necessarily like the best of friends or anything, but you know, he mentioned something about that.

"So you can tell when somebody is in dire need of having that special person back. And I think that's all it is."

Jason doesn't think there is anything wrong with Robin - who split from Paula earlier this year after eight years of marriage - talking about his feelings for the actress openly because as a singer/songwriter he is naturally a "creative" person.

Speaking to E!, he added: "As a musician, as a songwriter, that's what we do. We put our hearts on our sleeves and what's ever on our mind we just go to our safe zone, which is writing songs.

"So it seems to me that it's right in line with what a creative person would actually do. I think if he wasn't creative, then he wouldn't be talking about it all but the fact that he's a creative guy, that's what's on his mind and that's what he's going to talk about."
