Selena Gomez struggled to hold back tears following award

The 22-year-old singer-and-actress became the youngest person to ever take home the coveted Teen Choice Awards 'Ultimate Choice Award' and thanked fans for making her a "better" person

She said: "Thank you so much! I have to be honest—especially this month—I cannot thank you guys enough. You remind me, amidst all the stuff that we deal with personally, what's important, and that's giving and loving and caring about each other.

"I'm not trying to preach or any of that. It's just that you guys make me better, and I just really appreciate everything that you've done."

In her speech, the 'Spring Breakers' actress went on to pay tribute to her "incredible" mother and former manager Mandy Teefey.

She added: "I want to thank my mom so much because she's the greatest human being in the world, and she's strong and she's given up her life for me. She's so beautiful.

"She's incredible. This never belongs to me. This only goes to you. Thank you for letting me do what I love."

Elsewhere, One Direction - who weren't at the ceremony - were honoured with a staggering eight awards, including Choice Music Group, Choice Single Group for 'Story of My Life', Choice Break-Up Song for the same track, and Choice Male Hottie, which was shared between all five members. Additionally, Harry Styles was recognised in the Smile category.

'The Fault in Our Stars' was the big movie winner of the night, picking up six prizes, including Choice Movie Actor and Actress, Drama, for its stars Ansel Elgort and Shailene Woodley.

And the pair also saw their other movie 'Divergent' win Choice Movie, Action/Adventure, with Shailene also honoured for her performance in that film, as was their co-star Theo James.

Kylie Jenner celebrated her 17th birthday at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, picking up the Reality Show prize with her siblings Kendall Jenner and Kim Kardashian.

She said: "This has been the most awesome birthday present ever so thank you."

Other big winners at the ceremony - which was hosted by Sarah Hyland and Tyler Posey - included TV show 'Pretty Little Liars', which was honoured in five categories and 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire', which took home four prizes.
