Miley Cyrus is standing by her homeless friend Jesse Helt

The 'Wrecking Ball' hitmaker defended the aspiring model - who she brought to the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday (24.08.14), where he collected the award for Video of the Year on her behalf - after it emerged there is a warrant out for his arrest.

The 21-year-old beauty wrote on Twitter on Tuesday: "People who are homeless have lived very hard lives. Jesse included.

"I hope that this can be the start of a national conversation about youth homelessness and how to end it."

She added: "While they obsesses over one homeless mans legal issue lets help the other 1.6 million homeless youth (sic)"

Jesse is currently wanted by police in Salem, Oregon, for violating his probation, stemming from previous charges, including criminal trespassing and criminal mischief.

He was also charged after he attempted to break into an apartment in 2010, and according to E! News, he violated his probation on numerous occasions by failing to take a drug test, failing to report to his probation officer, breaching his curfew and not completing his community service hours.

Jesse gave an emotional speech while accepting Miley's award on Sunday, saying: "My name is Jesse, and I'm accepting this award on behalf of 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth who are starving lost and scared right now."

The 'We Can't Stop' singer, who works with My Friends Place to help homeless youth, later took him to the popular fast food chain In-N-Out Burger to celebrate.
