Eva Mendes is "heartbroken" at the thought of embarrassing her daughter.

The 40-year-old actress admits she is making new considerations about her career choices now she is a mother to Esmeralda, her two-month-old baby with boyfriend Ryan Gosling.

She told Violet Grey magazine: "I want to stay present with her. But I do consider how my own actions now will seem to her later on. For instance, with the Violet Grey photo shoot, I thought, 'Is this something that she's going to be proud of?' The idea that I would ever embarrass her is really heartbreaking for me."

The 'Holy Motors' actress and the 'Drive' actor - who have been together for three years - chose their daughter's name after being inspired by one of their favourite books.

She explained: "We both love the Esmeralda character from the Victor Hugo novel 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' and just think it's a beautiful name.

"Her middle is Amada, which was my grandmother's name. It means 'beloved' in Spanish.

"We were really excited about naming her."

Since having her little girl, Eva is astonished at how much of a "struggle" life is for very young children.

She said: "I've learned that it's way harder to be a baby.

"Everything is a struggle for her. For instance, I haven't thrown up since the '90s and she's thrown up twice since we started this interview. Motherhood is cake compared to what it's like to be a baby."
