George Lucas has splashed out thousands of dollars on five pieces of art.

The 'Star Wars' creator visited the Chicago studio of artist Hebru Brantley over the weekend and is believed to have blown a huge amount of money on creations by the rising star.

Although the sum of money the 70-year-old filmmaker forked out for the pieces has not been disclosed, it has been revealed he picked out two paintings and three sculptures to add to his multimillion dollar collection, the New York Post's Page Six column reports.

Hebru took to Instagram to admit it was "surreal" having George visit his studio in the Pilsen neighbourhood of the city, because he has always been such a huge fan of his movies.

Accompanying a photo with the star, he wrote: "Guess who stopped by the studio yesterday? I'll give you a hint he's Darth Vaders creator Lol. It was surreal spending time with a man I have grown up idolizing. And now having him be a fan of mine. So glad to now be in the Lucas collection. Hard work paying off. (sic)"

The artist - who has previously sold to Jay Z and Beyonce - is famed for depicting children and iconic characters in socially charged situations, and frequently sells his work for up to $150,000.

Last month, the movie mogul unveiled plans for a $300 million art museum - The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art - in Chicago, designed by Beijing architect Ma Yansong, which is expected to house the works when it opens in 2018.
