Ed Sheeran didn't do his school homework.

The 'Thinking Out Loud' hitmaker admits he was disinterested in school and, at a young age, was instead focused on forging a career in the music industry.

In an extract from his new book 'Ed Sheeran: A Visual Journey', which is published in the Daily Mirror newspaper, he explains: "I was not stimulated by school whatsoever.

"In almost every lesson I thought, 'This is pointless. What am I going to do with Biology or Chemistry?' I was sure that I could find a job in music.

"I could make tea at Island Records or be a studio hand, or I could end up being a songwriter.

"I didn't do homework and I remember not turning up to school for a long time. I had a lot of detentions and suspensions, which didn't go down well.

"My dad was always very supportive.

"My mum got cross. She thought I was throwing my life away.

"But from a very young age I thought: 'All I am is a statistic for the school in the Ofsted ratings.'"

The 23-year-old star admitted his dad, John, was instrumental in his success.

He explained: "My dad saw I wasn't exactly stimulated by trigonometry and science and all the stuff at school, but I loved playing and watching music.

"It was something that I was actually passionate about and worked hard for.

"So he took me to shows as often as he could, from when I was very young.

"I suppose that was my education - Eric Clapton at the Albert Hall, Paul McCartney at Earl's Court, and then Bob Dylan, Damien Rice, Richard Thompson. We went to loads of gigs."
