Jennifer Lopez was "so afraid to be alone."

The 45-year-old actress, who has been divorced three times and split from dancer Casper Smart last June after more than two years of dating, admits she used to jump from one relationship to the next and never gave herself time to heal.

The 'Booty' hitmaker said: "I always found my comfort in another person. Instead of giving myself time to heal and be on my own, I was so afraid to be alone that I was always like, 'Okay, somebody else just come in here and help me forget I'm in so much pain.'

"When I became famous, I was surrounded by people and always had a boyfriend or a husband or some relationship, one after the other.

"I was terrified of being alone: the idea that we are alone in this world; we are born alone, we die alone - it sent panic through my body."

Jennifer felt "awful" after splitting from Casper, 27, and banned herself from flirting.

She told PEOPLE magazine: "No boys in any way, shape of form. I said, 'I'm shutting it down.' "

The 'Boy Next Door' star, who has six-year-old twins Max and Emme with ex-husband Marc Anthony, is happily single at the moment but is open to finding love again.

She said: "The goal was to be okay on my own so I can make good choices.

"I'm open to possibilities. Listen, at the end of the day, love is the best thing. But what I've discovered is that I can't get that from somebody else. It's the love inside me, for myself, that will help me through."
