Mark Ruffalo feels honoured to be nominated for the Best Supporting Actor prize at the British Academy Film Awards alongside his 'Foxcatcher' co-star Steve Carell.

The 47-year-old actor stars as Dave Schultz - the brother of Olympic wrestling champion Mark Schultz - in the acclaimed film and says he hopes either he or Carell walks away with the prestigious gong.

Speaking on the red carpet in London prior to the ceremony at the Royal Opera House, he said: "It's a real honour to be up against Steve Carell in this category. It's strange, I hope one of us wins, that's all I have to say. But I love him, and I'm really happy to be here. For me, that's the least I can hope for."

Mark wrestled in his younger years, but says his experience wasn't much use when it came to shooting the film.

He explained: "My wrestling past didn't come back as easily as I'd hoped. I really felt my age, to be honest with you. It was a lot of hard work and it was pretty painful."

In fact, the actor, who starred as Bruce Banner/The Hulk in the Marvel Comic films, said it was the most physically demanding role he's ever taken.

He confessed: "It was probably the hardest thing I'd ever done. Ever. It was very, very difficult.

"Superheroes are nothing in comparison to this role. CGI helps with that. Everything you see is what we did. Wrestling is tough."

The other nominees for the Best Supporting Actor prize are Ethan Hawke ('Boyhood'), Edward Norton ('Birdman') and JK Simmons ('Whiplash').
