Eddie Redmayne learnt "a lot" from watching 'Neighbours' stars Alan Fletcher and Jackie Woodburne.

The 33-year-old star scooped a Best Actor prize at the Oscars for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in 'The Theory of Everything' and he has put part of his global success down to watching the Australian soap stars on a daily basis.

Speaking about Alan and Jackie - who play Dr. Karl Kennedy and Susan Kennedy respectively - Eddie told news.com.au: "I think they’re amazing.

“I’m a huge fan of them from old. I’ve learnt a lot from them from watching them daily.”

Alan, 57, was particularly pleased to hear of Eddie's praise and congratulated the actor on his award.

He added: “To receive such generous praise from an actor of Eddie Redmayne’s startling ability and status has been thrilling for both of us.

“It never ceases to excite me to hear examples of the influence 'Neighbours' has had beyond Australia. And congratulations Eddie for the recognition of your wonderful performance in The Theory of Everything.”

Jackie, 59, added: "It’s always wonderful when someone compliments your work, but to have such lovely things said from such an incredibly talented actor is very humbling and means more to me than he will ever know.”

While Eddie took home a prize from Los Angeles' Dolby Theater last night, Brits were also keen to see his leading lady Felicity Jones - who played Stephen's wife in the movie - and Gone Girl's Rosamund Pike pick up awards, according to research carried out by Cineworld, the UK’s leading cinema chain.

However, both were unsuccessful as Julianne Moore - who was fourth in the list of who Brits wanted to win Best Actress at the ceremony behind Wild's Reese Witherspoon - took home the Best Actress award for her role in 'Still Alice'.
