Ellie Goulding and Lewis Hamilton suffered an awkward BRIT Awards moment when she jokingly suggested they should get married.

The pair took to the stage to present the Best International Female Artist award at the live ceremony inside London's O2 Arena, but were both left laughing nervously after the 28-year-old singer joked she and the Formula 1 driver, who recently split from Nicole Scherzinger, were going to tie the knot after the event.

As they approached the stage Ellie admitted she was relieved to have "made it" without falling over her floor-length white dress.

Lewis then asked the 15,000-strong crowd how they were and then encouraged them to get a bit louder, which the blonde beauty found hilarious and started laughing.

He began to start off proceedings of their Best International Female Artist presentation but Ellie interjected saying: "Sorry, I have to hold myself, I can't properly."

Then referring to her long outfit, Lewis quipped: "Are you going to a wedding or something?"

Slightly taken aback by the comment, Ellie tried to turn it round in her favour by joking: "Uh, excuse me, yeah … ours!"

Lewis then started chuckling nervously and Ellie said: "That was a good one"

But the F1 driver jokingly said: "No."

Following a slight awkward pause, Ellie said, "Oh, hang on, shall I say … the nominees are …" and she then finally started to read out the nominees for the award, and the pair went on to present the accolade to Ellie's good pal Taylor Swift.

Lewis and Ellie's presentation proved to be a hot topic on Twitter with many commenting on the "awkward" pair and some poking fun at the racing driver.

Holly0910 tweeted: "Why did Ellie Goulding & Lewis Hamilton act as if they just woke up beside eachother after a drunken one night stand? SO awkward #BRITs (sic)"

D_Manning wrote: "How awkward are Ellie Goulding and Lewis Hamilton?! #BRITs #BRITAwards (sic)"

lucy ?@lucyjohnstone_ tweeted: "I actually think Lewis Hamilton maybe the only person ever to turn down marrying Ellie Golding. Like ever. #BRITs (sic)"
