Lady Gaga questioned her "identity and self-worth" as young girl

The 'Pokerface' hitmaker's mother Cynthia Germanotta has revealed her daughter - whose real name is Stefani Germanotta - wasn't fully appreciated by her peers for who she was and the "cruelty" lead her to feel isolated.

Writing for Billboard magazine, Cynthia said: "[She] was creative and unequivocally her own person, but her peers didn't always appreciate the things that made her unique - and different.

"[The] persistent, thoughtless cruelty of her peers caused Stefani to question her identity and self-worth."

The mother and daughter team set up the Born This Way Foundation to support those feeling a similar way.

Speaking in a video promoting the campaign, she said: "I know what it's like to feel depressed, to feel humiliated, to feel isolated. And I know too many young people, no matter who they are or where they come from, who are feeling the same way I do.

"It was so beautiful, in a way, that our sadness bonded us at the shows and yet, I so badly wanted to understand why that cloud was there at all. How could I help to lift it? How could I help to be a part of more of a global change and working together, we can make the world a kinder and braver place where all voices are heard, all feelings are respected."

Advising those who may feel the same way as her, she added: "It's OK to be different. It's OK to feel different. It's OK to feel like you're not part of the planet because there's all sorts of really authentic answers as to why...

"I challenge you today to be your biggest fan and join the emotion revolution... Tell the world how you feel but more importantly, tell them how you want to feel."
