    Omar Sharif laid to rest.

The 'Doctor Zhivago' actor - who passed away after suffering a heart attack aged 83 on Friday (10.07.15) - was celebrated during a ceremony at the grand mosque of Mushir Tantawi in Cairo, Egypt, where his casket was draped in the Egyptian flag and a black shroud as mourners said their goodbyes.

Fellow Egyptian actor Hussein Fahmy was one of the many friends and family members who came to bid farewell to the star, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease in the latter years of his life.

Several reports now suggest he will be buried at El Sayeda Nafisa cemetery in the south of Cairo.

Meanwhile, tributes have poured in from around the world for the three-time Golden Globe winner, with his 'Funny Girl' co-star Barbra Streisand describing him as "handsome, sophisticated and charming".

She said: "Omar was my first leading man in the movies.

"He was handsome, sophisticated and charming. He was a proud Egyptian.

"I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to work with Omar, and I'm profoundly sad to hear of his passing."

Antonio Banderas also sent his condolences following the death of his "great friend" who he said he "will always miss".

He tweeted: "My great friend Omar Sharif has passed away. I will always miss him. He was one of the best. D.E.P (sic)."

Also posting on Twitter, 'Live and Let Die' actor Sir Roger Moore praised Omar for his starring role in the 1962 epic 'Lawrence of Arabia', for which he won the Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe.

He tweeted: "The wonderful shot of Omar Sharif's introduction in Lawrence has stayed with me for years. Genius film and terrific actor. He will be missed. (sic)"
