Caitlyn Jenner's friend Candis Cayne has defended her glamorous transformation

The transgender actress, who has become one of the E! reality star's closest pals since her own transition earlier this year, says Caitlyn needed to show her feminine side in her now infamous Vanity Fair cover.

She told The Hollywood Reporter: "When you're coming from a sports hero, you have to do a 180, you have to go the exact opposite.

"If they're gonna put her in a frumpy dress on the cover of Vanity Fair, nothing would have been gained by that. They needed to show that side of Caitlyn, which is female, ultimately female. And every girl has that in her, doesn't she?"

On her reality show 'I Am Cait', Caitlyn, 65, admitted her racy photoshoot for Vanity Fair proved "too sexy" for her sons Brody, 32, Brandon, 34 and Burt, 36.

She told pal Candis Cayne: "It's not easy. A few little incidences."

Questioned what she meant, she explained: "A couple of the kids thought that the Vanity Fair shoot was a little too sexy."

However, the former Olympian revealed her daughters Casey, 35, Kendall, 19 and Kylie, 18 as well as step-daughters Kourtney, 36, Kim, 34, and Khloé Kardashian, 31, didn't have a problem with the saucy images.

She continued: "It's the guys. I don't think they get kind of the girl thing."

But Candis was quick to insist there was nothing wrong with the photos.

She said: "But Cait, you have been repressing your inner woman for so many years."

Nevertheless, Caitlyn explained although she wants to be true to herself, she doesn't want to lose the important relationship she has with her family members.

She added: "I want to respect my kids. I just want to take care of myself."
