Kris Jenner didn't support Caitlyn Jenner at the ESPY Awards because it would have been "awkward".

The 60-year-old matriarch decided against joining her five daughters at the awards show - where her former spouse picked up the Arthur Ashe Courage Award - earlier this summer because she didn't want their first meeting since the 'I Am Cait' star's transition from Bruce to take place at such a high-profile event.

She explained: "I haven't met Caitlyn yet and I think it would be so awkward to meet her under these circumstances."

And the situation was also tough on Kim Kardashian West, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian, and Kendall and Kylie Jenner but they felt their loyalties were divided.

As a compromise, the sisters agreed to attend the ESPYs but not the dinner afterwards, opting to take Kris out instead.

Kim explained on the premiere episode of the new season of 'Keeping Up With the Kardashians': "We want to go to the ESPYS. We want to support her.

"I also am really sensitive to my mom, though, because Caitlyn just did a Vanity Fair article that wasn't so nice to my mom. But I just have to balance out both people so they both feel supported."

And though Kris was happy with the decision, Caitlyn wasn't so impressed.

Kendall told Kim and Kourtney: "Dad and Mom put me and Kylie into this weird position of choosing between them. "Dad wouldn't talk to me."

Meanwhile, Khloe has admitted she had a "hard time" processing the news of Caitlyn's transition because she only learned while filming the reality show what her stepfather was planning to do.

She told talk show host Ellen DeGeneres: "I had a hard time because I found out on camera like while we were filming and I felt like we kept asking him, 'Bruce, like what's going on? We're hearing all these rumours.' "And he kept telling us one thing, but really he knew he was transitioning and wouldn't be honest with us. "So we felt like we were kind of the last to know so that was hard for us. Especially me."
