Taylor Swift was the big winner at the American Music Awards.

The 'Style' hitmaker took home three awards at the coveted ceremony, both Song Of The Year for 'Blank Space' and Favourite Pop/Rock Album for '1989' as well as the gong for Favourite Adult Contemporary Artist but wasn't in attendance to collect her nods.

She had stiff competition, though, from a number of artists including One Direction, Nicki Minaj and The Weeknd who all secured two wins on the night.

The chart-topping boy band - which includes Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson - took home the award for Favourite Pop/Rock Duo/Group for the third year in the row whilst Nicki Minaj secured gongs for Favourite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Album.

Elsewhere during the evening, viewers were treated to brilliant performances from the likes of Justin Bieber - who performed a medley of three of his recent hits, 'What Do You Mean?, 'Sorry' and 'Where Are Ü Now'; the latter which had earlier won an award for Collaboration Of The Year.

And Meghan Trainor and Charlie Puth shocked fans when they locked lips following their performance of their smash hit song 'Marvin Gaye', whilst Coldplay previewed a new song, 'Adventure of a Lifetime'.

One Direction, Ariana Grande and Demi Lovato were also on hand to perform their latest singles for the excited crowd.

In a particularly poignant moment, Celine Dion led a heartfelt tribute to the victims of the Paris terrorist attacks with a stunning rendition of Edith Piaf's 'Hymne à L'Amour'.
