Leonardo DiCaprio is one step closer to the Oscars after winning the Screen Actors Guild award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role.

The 41-year-old actor beat off competition from Bryan Cranston, Johnny Depp, Michael Fassbender and Eddie Redmayne to take home the award for his performance in 'The Revenant' and paid tribute to his parents in an emotional speech.

He said: "I am truly humbled by this because it comes from my fellow actors.

"When I was 15 I was lucky enough to get a film called 'This Boy's Life' and after that I watched as many films as I could and it gave me a such a respect for this craft.

"I was in awe of the performances and I was inspired. To any young actors, I encourage you to watch the history of cinema because we stand on the shoulders of giants.

"My parents, thank you for listening to an overly ambitions, slightly annoying 13-year-old kid who wanted to go on auditions after school, I would not be here without you."

Brie Larson continued her winning streak by taking home the prize for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for 'Room', ahead of fellow nominees Cate Blanchett, Helen Mirren, Saoirse Ronan and Sarah Silverman.

Idris Elba won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for 'Beasts of No Nation' and also walked away with the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Mini-series prize for 'Luther'.

Alicia Vikander's role in 'The Danish Girl' saw her beat off the competition to take home the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role trophy.

The ensemble of 'Spotlight' won the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture prize while in TV, Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series was won by 'Downton Abbey'.

'Orange Is The New Black' had two wins, one for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series and another for Uzo Aduba for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series.

Carol Burnett was presented with the 52nd Annual SAG Life Achievement Award at the ceremony, which was held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Saturday night (30.01.16).

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey introduced the comedic actress and poked fun at Leonardo while doing so.

Amy quipped: "Let's all calm down about Leonardo DiCaprio and how hard it was to shoot 'The Revenant'. So you slept in a horse and ate bison liver, big whoop. Carol would have slept in that horse, worn it, done a song and a dance, and made a much funnier face after eating something very disgusting."
