Gemma Arterton actively seeks work that scares her.

The 30-year-old actress has revealed she has tried to follow the advice handed down to her by fellow actress Tamsin Greig, who she starred alongside in a production of 'Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown'.

Gemma explained: "She was like, 'Compare, despair. Don't compare yourself.' She's so brilliant. Years ago we did a play together and she said, 'Do things that scare you, Gemma.' I've always remembered that and tried to keep to it."

For this reason, Gemma relished her time on the stage in London's West End, when she starred in 'Made In Dagenham'.

She shared: "That was scary. I remember going to rehearsals and everyone being an amazing singer apart from me and finding it was really intimidating."

Meanwhile, Gemma also claimed she has seen a noticeable improvement in the roles that are being written for actresses.

She told the Sunday Times newspaper: "It's so different from how it was even five years ago.

"There are great stories that haven't been told. I'd love to do a film about [silent film actress] Mary Pickford, or the first ever female barrister. And not just historical characters, but also stuff that's more kind of female-centric."
