Kendall Jenner got starstruck for the first time when she met President Barack Obama.

The 20-year-old model admitted she doesn't normally get overcome with nerves when she meets other famous people but couldn't help but be gripped by shyness when she came face-to-face with the US leader at the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner.

Asked if she gets starstruck, she said: "Never. That was like my first time, ever."

But the president was more interested in Kendall's half sister Kim Kardashian West and brother-in-law Kanye West, who he has met several times.

Kendall told People magazine: "He was like, 'Say hi to Kim and Kanye. I was like 'OK.' "

And the president later admitted he was "not exactly sure" what Kendall's job is when he gave her a shout-out during his speech.

To laughter from everyone in the audience, including Kendall, he said: "Kendall Jenner is also here. And we had a chance to meet backstage.

"She seems like a very nice young woman. I'm not exactly sure what she does. But I am told that my Twitter mentions are about to go through the roof."

Kendall's mother Kris Jenner had earlier posted on Instagram of how proud she was of her "elegant and beautiful" daughter for being invited to the prestigious event, which is also jokingly known as "nerd prom".

The 'Keeping Up With the Kardashians' star said of her mom's post: "She's already Instagrammed it. I know she's proud. She's all over it."

While the president poked fun at Kendall during his speech, he couldn't bring himself to mock screen legend Dame Helen Mirren.

He simply said: "Helen Mirren is here tonight. I don't even have a joke here. I just think Helen Mirren is awesome."

Much of the 54-year-old politician's speech mocked the fact he is in his final year in the White House, and he even joked about his recent meeting with Britain's Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, when their young son Prince George, two, was allowed to stay up late to meet the American and his wife Michelle.

He said: "In just six short months I will be officially a lame duck, which means Congress now will flat out reject my rhetoric and republican leaders won't take my phone calls...

"But it's not just Congress, even some foreign leaders, they've been looking ahead to the next leader. Last week, Prince George showed up to our meeting in his bathrobe. That was a slap in the face. A clear breach of protocol."

The annual fundraising gathering of White House correspondents and their guests - who were entertained by 'The Nightly Show' host Larry Wilmore - was also attended by the likes of Kerry Washington, Emma Watson, Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett, and Michelle Dockery, who appeared on the red carpet for the first time since her fiance John Dineen died of cancer five months ago.
