Amber Heard's friends have rubbished the suggestion she was "hated" by Johnny Depp's family.

The 30-year-old actress filed for divorce from the 52-year-old actor just three days after Johnny's mother Betty Sue Palmer died of a long-standing illness - but sources close to the blonde beauty have refuted the notion she was unpopular among her estranged husband's family.

An insider told People magazine: "Amber was by Betty Sue's side during this illness and regularly visited her in the hospital.

"She had been gravely ill for the last few years but they made sure she was well taken care of and had the best treatment. Johnny was very close to his mom."

Meanwhile, it has been reported Amber celebrated her 30th birthday without Johnny - weeks before she filed for a divorce.

The actress - who requested the dissolution of their marriage on Monday (23.05.16), citing irreconcilable differences - reached the milestone on April 22.

Her decision to party without her husband at The Parker Hotel in Palm Springs, California served to fuel speculation that their marriage was on the rocks.

An onlooker said Amber "had a great time" with friends and "they looked to be enjoying themselves", but her spouse - who she wed in February 2015 - was absent from the birthday bash.

What's more, the 'Magic Mike XXL' star attended the Met Gala in New York City in May without Johnny, which also served to fan the flames of speculation.

But in November last year, Amber rubbished the suggestion their marriage was on rocky ground.

Of the rumours that surrounded their personal lives, she said: "I try not to react to the horrible misrepresentation of our lives, but it is strange and hard."
