Tom Fletcher has celebrated his 30th birthday - over 11 months late.

The McFly frontman was too sick to enjoy reaching the milestone on July 17 last year, so his wife Giovanna - with whom he has sons Buzz, two, and Buddy, four months - rallied his friends and loved ones for a belated Christmas-themed celebration on Sunday.

He shared a picture of their cutlery in Christmas stocking packaging and wrote: "So @mrsgifletcher has thrown me a surprise birthday meal! Guess the theme...(sic)"

He further explained on Instagram: "Last year I was sick and had to cancel my 30th bday plans so my wonderful wife @mrsgifletcher threw me surprise 30th today before I turn 31 in a couple of weeks. Total surprise!"

The 'All About You' singer was particularly delighted to receive a navy birthday cake decorated with snowflakes and a festive tree, while in icing, the message 'Tom, you are still 30! Happy Birthday! xxx' was written around the edge.

He captioned a picture of the sweet treat: "Here's my surprise "Still 30" bday cake! Peanut butter & chocolate...ridiculously good! Made by @julietsear, thanks!(sic)"

And it seems the belated birthday boy overindulged on the cake as shortly afterwards he tweeted: "I've had too much sugar."

Following his party posts, Tom was inundated with messages from fans, prompting him to have to clarify again that it wasn't actually his birthday.

He wrote: "To all those wishing me happy bday, it's not my actual birthday for a couple of weeks but I had a very late (a year) surprise 30th today. (sic)"

Meanwhile, Giovanna admitted it was tricky to plan the party in secret.

She revealed in her blog for HELLO! Online:" Last year For Tom's 30th we had a big BBQ celebration planned BUT had to cancel when he woke up with a tummy bug! This meant that we never really celebrated him entering his thirties. And we couldn't have that. So I decided to throw him a surprise 'Tom is still 30' meal before he turns 31 in two weeks.

"I can't tell you how difficult it's been to keep the whole thing secret. I've had to stop myself saying so much over the last month, but I somehow managed it and he didn't have a foggiest what was going on... with the Christmas theme helping to confuse him even more!"

And now the author is feeling the pressure as to how to celebrate her spouse's upcoming 31st birthday.

She added: "Tom will openly admit that he's not the most sociable person ever and can feel quite anxious in the lead up to events, so having all of his favourite people suddenly sprung on him cut out all of that anxiety.

"I'm so pleased he had a great time, although now I've got to think about what to do in two weeks for his 31st birthday! All ideas welcome!"
