Amy Adams insists she's not a celebrity.

The 42-year-old actress may be a household name thanks to her glittering movie career, but she doesn't think of herself in terms of her fame.

Speaking to New York magazine, she said: "I don't think of myself as a celebrity. It's not a part of my pursuit. Nothing against those who do."

The 'Man of Steel' actress - who has six-year-old daughter Aviana with husband Darren Le Gallo - also admitted that the reason she doesn't see herself as a celebrity is because she's "really naïve" and "shocked" by the world around her, especially on social media - something she is grateful wasn't around when she was younger.

She said: "I am still really naïve. I am continuously shocked. [By] the world! How people behave. Like, it would never occur to me to post a picture of myself in my underwear on Twitter. Maybe the 20-year-old me - I shudder to think of what I would have done in my moment of desperation and seeing what I might've chased."

However, despite not considering herself as a celebrity, Amy has revealed that she would love to star as Janice Joplin - who died of an overdose aged 27 in 1970 - in a biopic about the musician's life, and has long been chasing the movie role that she considers "beautiful".

She said: "When people first brought the project to my attention, I said, 'I can't do this; people would judge me and tell me all the reasons that I am not like her.' And then when I started reading about her, I realised that she was this beautiful human plagued by things which are so common. She had a need to find something. People saw this huge personality, but there was this soulfulness and this screaming child inside of her."
