Luke Perry has paid tribute to his 'Beverly Hills, 90210' co-star Shannen Doherty

The 50-year-old actor described the actress as "great" during a talk at the show's reunion over the weekend, from which his former on-screen partner was absent due to her ongoing battle with breast cancer.

Speaking at the reunion as part of REWind Con in Bloomingdale, Illinois, on Saturday (12.11.16), he said: "None of us are up here today without Shannen.

"She's been through a lot. She's not doing well right now but sometimes her contributions are minimised. She's been thrown under the bus. I've been accused of driving it. But she's a very big part of the success of this show. She taught me a lot. I'm glad she was my scene partner. She was great at what she did in the character with me."

The US drama series aired from October 4, 1990 to May 17, 2000 and saw a strong connection with Luke, who portrayed Dylan McKay, and Shannen, who played the fierce and passionate Brenda Walsh.

The pair were on/off lovers and regularly involved in passionate scenes.

Shannen's on-screen partner wasn't the only co-star to support the 45-year-old actress as on the same night Jennie Garth paid tribute to the actress through her Instagram account.

She posted: "Fight Like a Brenda.

"To my soul sister @theshando strongest lady i've ever known. then and now.

"I used to be threatened by your spirit, now i'm in awe of it. you've taught me a lot about speaking my mind and not being afraid of my power. i'm so grateful that young me got to be friends with you. but especially 'old' me! the best is yet to come on this crazy journey!! love you! #fightlikeagirl #fightlikebrenda #aries. (sic)"

The former 'Dancing with the Stars' contestant has openly spoken out about her cancer battle since making her illness public in August 2015.

During a recent acceptance speech, she said: "Cancer has changed my life for the better. It's made me a better human being. It stripped away all of the walls and the barriers."
