Slip closes road south of Kaikoura

The main highway south of Kaikoura has been closed by a slip, forcing motorists to again use the inland road.

Motorists wanting to travel between Christchurch and Kaikoura are again having to use the inland road after a slip closed State Highway 1.

The slip came down on Tuesday night between Peketa and Goose Bay, the New Zealand Transport Agency says.

The road remained closed on Wednesday morning with officials expected to update the situation around 9am.

SH1 north and south of Kaikoura were badly damaged by the November 14 earthquake but the highway south of the town reopened just before Christmas.
