    Pascoe receives Laureus nomination

Para-swimmer Sophie Pascoe is the only New Zealander to be nominated for the prestigious Laureus world sports awards.

New Zealand para-swimmer Sophie Pascoe has made the prestigious Laureus award short list for the world sportsperson of the year with a disability.

Pascoe, 24, won three gold medals and two silver at the Rio Paralympics last year, and is New Zealand's most successful Paralympian ever.

She won Paralympic titles in the S10 100m butterfly, 100m backstroke and the SM10 200m individual medley, setting a new world record in the process.

Pascoe also finished second in the 50m and 100m freestyle.

She has also made the short list for New Zealand's Halberg Awards disabled sportsperson of the year award, an honour she has won four times in the last five years.

Belarus swimmer Ihar Boki, Cuban sprinter Omara Durand, weightlifter Siamand Rahman of Iran, Italian fencer Beatrice Vio and Swiss wheelchair racer Marcel Hug complete the Laureus short list.

The winners will be announced on February 14 at a ceremony in Monaco.

Last year, the All Blacks became the first New Zealanders to win a Laureus award when the World Cup-winning team were named team of the year.

First five-eighth Dan Carter, who suffered what could have been a career-ending injury in the 2011 tournament victory, earned the Comeback of the Year award.
