Bus and car in fiery crash in Southland

All passengers are off a bus involved in a crash with a car in Southland, but police are working to ascertain who was in the other vehicle.

All passengers on a bus involved in a collision with a car in Southland are out of the vehicle, police say.

However, police are working to ascertain who was in the car which, like the bus, was on fire when emergency services arrived at the scene on the Te Anau-Milford Highway.

Inspector Joel Lamb, Southland Area Commander, says the extent of the fire means a search of the car for occupants has not yet been possible.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident at Te Anau Downs at 2.55pm on Tuesday.

The bus was carrying tourists and some of those on board were taken to a medical centre in Te Anau to be assessed for minor injuries.

Other passengers were picked up by other buses that were nearby.

Insp Lamb said the road was closed in both directions while investigators examined the scene and they expected to take well into the evening.

Both the police serious crash unit and the commercial vehicle investigation unit are looking into the incident.
